The New York Times: The cyberattack on U.S. water systems was likely carried out by Iranian hackers
The New York Times, citing informed sources, reported that American investigators believe this week’s cyberattack on dozens of urban water systems in Minnesota and several other states was likely the work of Iranian hackers, although responsibility for the attack has not yet been definitively confirmed.
According to these sources, investigators suspect that the attackers may have posed as Iranian hackers to escalate tensions between Tehran and Washington, but former intelligence officials have assessed this scenario as unlikely.
The New York Times wrote that so far, there have been no signs of contamination in the drinking water. The report adds that the focus of the attack on causing disruption rather than financial gain is one of the factors leading investigators to suspect the involvement of hackers linked to Iran.
