North Korea sees the joint military exercise of South Korea and the United States as a prelude to a nuclear war.
The annual joint exercise between the US and South Korea started on Tuesday, August 19. The purpose of this exercise is to increase the readiness of both countries to counter North Korea’s weapons and cyber threats.
According to US and South Korean military officials, this exercise focuses not only on cyber threats but also on all threats from North Korea.
This exercise, named Ulchi Freedom Guardian, will continue until August 29 amid escalating tensions between Seoul and Pyongyang.
South Korean officials have announced the presence of approximately 19,000 troops from their country in this exercise, while US officials have chosen to remain silent about the number of their forces in this exercise.
Some reports indicate that this exercise includes over forty types of field exercises in addition to computer-simulated war games. Rapid civilian evacuation in response to an air attack is also among the anticipated components of this exercise.
