Opposition of Two Clerics from Qom Seminary to Mandatory Hijab

Ayatollah Soroush Mahallati: In this environment, are our children encouraged to wear hijab? Can the police, with tools like batons and handcuffs, be responsible for teaching religious matters? According to sermon 236 of Nahj al-Balagha, these individuals do not have the right to guide. Those who have a harsh spirit and lack gentle feelings and social character are lowly and servile people who blindly follow any command and lack dignity. People who are gathered from various corners of the country and lack social understanding, whose understanding of religion is superficial and have not yet reached a deep understanding of Islam. Individuals who lack manners and culture and need education.

Ayatollah Seyed Mohammad Ali Ayazi: In the discussion of hijab, we ask whether all people believe in the obligation of hijab and recognize lack of hijab as a disorder. In my opinion, many people do not recognize lack of hijab as a disorder. In fact, some of our media sometimes use these women for their own purposes, such as political goals like elections and participation in rallies. Therefore, it becomes clear that even the broadcasting organization does not consider lack of hijab a disorder. The issue of improper hijab is not considered a disorder. We do not have any justification that if someone does not observe hijab, we can force them to do so through punishment.
