Portugal asks Iran to release seized ship by summoning Iranian ambassador from Tehran

Portugal has summoned the Iranian ambassador from Tehran demanding the release of the seized ship.

The Portuguese Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the seizure of a ship owned by an Israeli billionaire by the Revolutionary Guards and called for its release.

The Emassey Aris ship, sailing under the flag of Portugal, was seized by the Revolutionary Guards on 15 April, 50 miles off the coast of Fujairah, UAE, and transferred to Bandar Abbas.

The Portuguese Foreign Ministry stated on Tuesday, 17 April, that it will wait for the outcome of summoning the Iranian ambassador and will issue an official protest, evaluating any further steps accordingly.

In response to the seizure of the ship, the Israeli Foreign Minister accused Iran of maritime piracy.
