Following violent clashes at Place de la Concorde near the French parliament in Paris, protests have been banned in large parts of the city’s center
Today, there were also protests against the French government’s pension reform, most of which were peaceful
Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, wants to use a specific clause in the French Constitution to raise the retirement age to 64 without presenting the proposed changes to parliament
The constitutional clause that the French government has resorted to has been used a hundred times in the sixty-year history of the Fifth Republic, although recent cases were not as significant and far-reaching as the pension reform
In recent weeks, there have been large protests against Mr. Macron’s controversial plan to change pension laws, and leftists and labor unions have organized large strikes on some days, disrupting economic activity
