Public Protests in China at the World’s Largest iPhone Manufacturing Plant
The policy known as Zero Covid, based on the Chinese government’s determination to eradicate and eliminate the spread of the coronavirus, has meant public shutdowns, mandatory quarantines, multiple Covid tests for each person, and of course, cover-ups in the statistics.
Xi Jinping not only has not moderated or regretted this policy, but has even promoted the manager of this policy’s implementation in Shanghai to one of the highest political and administrative positions in China. This is despite the fact that the implementation of the Zero Covid policy in Shanghai has caused serious damage to China’s economy and society, and naturally to the global supply chain.
The Covid crisis in China has taken on a new complexity after the country’s authorities were forced to admit the death of a Covid patient. Now, the capital of China is facing a lockdown and quarantine crisis. Previously, we reported that employees of Apple’s most important manufacturing site in China were trapped in quarantine and confined to their dormitories.
Now, these employees have become fed up with the mandatory quarantine situation, and the non-payment of their wages has added to their problems. Their anger reached its peak, leading to a large public protest that resulted in clashes with security forces. Despite censorship and control of social media and the internet, a group of protesters managed to publish images of the protests and clashes with the security forces.
