Putin’s Absence at Ebrahim Raisi’s Funeral

Following the presence of the Speaker of the Russian Duma as the representative of the country at Ebrahim Raisi’s funeral, the Kremlin stated that Vladimir Putin personally made the decision not to attend.

While leaders from several countries have traveled to Tehran to participate in the funeral, Putin’s absence as the main ally of the Islamic Republic has drawn attention.

Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, announced on Thursday, May 22, that ‘we participated in the farewell ceremony, not the burial. After the Iranian side announced the details of the farewell and its date and location, President Putin made this decision.’

According to the Russian news agency TASS, it was added that Vyacheslav Volodin, the Speaker of the Duma, was chosen to travel to Tehran on behalf of Vladimir Putin.
