Mehdi Taj was one of the founders of transferring Sepahan Football Club from Sepahan Cement Factory to Mobarakeh Steel Company of Isfahan. In 2000, he became a board member of this factory and carried out the change of ownership of this sports club. In the same year, he joined the board of directors of this club and was the CEO of Sepahan Steel Club of Isfahan from 1993 to 1998. He has also been the chairman of the board of directors of this club.

Taj became the president of the Football Federation while he was not without involvement in the 92 trillion rial violations at Mobarakeh Steel.
