Ukrainian officials say Russia is using tear gas to clear bunkers.

Russian forces are throwing tear gas canisters towards Ukrainian defense positions to push back troops from the frontlines towards their bunkers, putting soldiers, who are mostly not equipped with gas masks, in life-threatening situations.

An Ukrainian soldier told Reuters that it’s something like pepper spray that makes your eyes tear up. It’s not lethal but it causes discomfort and incapacitates you. Performing duties after inhaling this gas is very challenging.

The Ukrainian army states that Russia has increased the unlawful use of riot control tools in the frontlines to clear bunkers. This comes despite the international convention on chemical weapons that both Russia and Ukraine have signed, which prohibits the use of riot control agents like tear gas on the battlefield.
