Rubio: Iran’s proposal for reopening the Strait of Hormuz is unacceptable
The U.S. Secretary of State criticized Iran’s proposal regarding the Strait of Hormuz, deeming it contrary to the principles of an international waterway.
Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, in an interview with Fox News, criticized Iran’s proposed plan for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, stating that such a model is unacceptable.
He explained that from Iran’s perspective, reopening the strait means ships passing through with coordination and obtaining permission from Tehran, a matter which he said contradicts the nature of an international waterway.
Rubio emphasized that a system will not be allowed to form where one country decides who can pass through this route or charges a fee for it.
Earlier reports had been published indicating that Iran had proposed a plan for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the most important energy transit routes in the world, with about one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas consumption passing through this route.
These remarks come as tensions over control of this strategic waterway continue.
