Russia blocked access to WhatsApp and restricted Telegram

WhatsApp announced that the Russian government, as part of efforts to promote the use of a domestic app, has completely blocked this messaging service in the country.

This messaging service, which belongs to Meta Platforms, stated in a declaration that it will strive to maintain communication with its over 100 million Russian users. Reports indicate that access for millions of people in Russia to this service has been suddenly cut off.

Simultaneously with the restriction of access to foreign messaging services, the Russian government is promoting the use of a state super app called Max, an app that, in addition to messaging, offers government services, document storage, and banking services.

It has also been reported that Telegram, another popular messaging service in Russia, is facing restrictions, and the country’s communications regulatory authority is considering limiting access to it.
