Russia says Europe’s activation of the snapback mechanism against Iran is illegal
Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, reacted on Thursday to the activation of the snapback mechanism by three European countries, stating that the European troika’s decision to reimpose sanctions on Iran has no legal basis, and we believe that the UN Security Council should not act based on the European troika’s move.
The Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations announced at a press conference at the United Nations that China and Russia have submitted a draft resolution to extend the Iran nuclear deal, saying that a few hours ago, China and Russia presented a draft resolution to extend the Iran nuclear agreement for six months.
Referring to this proposed draft, Polyanskiy said the Security Council will decide to technically extend this resolution for six months until April 18, 2026, confirming the importance of a diplomatic solution in the context of Resolution 2231 issued in 2015 regarding the need for more time for negotiations.
All JCPOA members must also immediately resume their negotiations.
He emphasized that, in Russia’s view, Europe’s action has no legal justification and added that Europe did not implement Resolution 2231.
They took no action to lift sanctions against Iran, they have consistently violated the JCPOA, and they have not implemented any of the JCPOA mechanisms.
As a result, the recent action by Europe should not lead to any action by the Security Council.
The Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations stated that the European troika’s action is provocative and without any legal backing, which should not lead to any legal action, and said that Western countries have shown that they have no understanding of diplomacy and do not value it at all.
