Russian Security Council Deputy: Maduro May Be Pardoned by Trump
Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, has stated that Nicolás Maduro, the detained President of Venezuela, will most likely be pardoned in the future, if not by Donald Trump, then at least by the next President of the United States.
Medvedev emphasized in an editorial that the pursuit of charges against Maduro by the United States is politically motivated and lacks validity from the perspective of fundamental norms of international law, including the principle of immunity for heads of state, territorial integrity, and human rights.
Referring to the United States’ history, he said that Washington has repeatedly ignored international public law principles and judicial procedures under the pretext of its national interests.
According to the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, in such circumstances, the prosecution of Maduro could be perceived as a political warning to countries that oppose what he termed the ‘Monroe Doctrine,’ but nevertheless, this case is likely to end with a political pardon.
