Sediqeh Vaesmaqi emphasized in her letters from prison the necessity of separating religion from government.

Sediqeh Vaesmaqi, a religious scholar and Islamic studies researcher imprisoned, has emphasized in her open letters about women’s rights and Islamic politics the necessity of separating religion from government.

In this letter published on Mrs. Vaesmaqi’s Instagram page, it is stated that 45 years of painful experience living under Sharia laws, which according to the writer are nothing more than ancient traditions, and furthermore, 45 years of living under the extremist jurisprudence of the Islamic Republic have led many Iranians to the conclusion that religion must be separated from government, undoubtedly for the realization of the people’s sovereignty over their own destiny, this separation is necessary.

Mrs. Vaesmaqi was arrested in late February 2024 at her home in Tehran and was accused of sanctions on elections, publishing images without a headscarf, and her opposing views on hijab.
