The Saudi Foreign Minister met with Bashar Assad

News outlets in Syria have reported that Bashar Assad met with Prince Faisal bin Farhan, the Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister, in Damascus on Tuesday.

The Saudi Foreign Minister’s visit to Damascus is the most significant step taken so far towards ending a decade of Syria’s isolation in the Arab world.

Faisal bin Farhan arrived in Damascus on Tuesday, a week after the Syrian Foreign Minister’s visit to Saudi Arabia.

The two countries agreed to resume diplomatic relations last month.

Following the suppression of the Syrian people by Bashar Assad’s government in 2011, many Arab countries cut their relations with Syria.

Since the devastating earthquake in February in Syria and Turkey, several new regional initiatives have been proposed to reintegrate Syria into the Arab League.

This position was discussed at last week’s meeting of nine Arab countries in Saudi Arabia.

The Syrian Foreign Minister is currently in Tunisia.
