Secretary General of the Iranian Water Industry Federation: Some Clauses of the Seventh Development Plan Are Laughable

The Secretary General of the Iranian Water Industry Federation says some clauses of the Seventh Development Plan are laughable.

Alireza Shariat, the Secretary General of the Iranian Water Industry Federation, in an interview with the House of Economy, said that the Ministry of Agriculture, as the largest water consumer in Iran, has not mentioned water at all during this time when the water crisis is being discussed.

Mr. Shariat said that 8 billion cubic meters, equivalent to the drinking water of the entire population of Iran, is used by this ministry for the production of alfalfa.

The Secretary General of the Federation criticized the municipalities for not being accountable regarding the water consumption of green spaces, while pointing to the amount of green space in Tehran.

Mr. Shariat criticized the Ministry of Energy’s policies, saying that this ministry has acted passively and instead of controlling water consumption, it has focused on supplying the needed water.

He described some clauses of the Seventh Development Plan as laughable, saying that in one clause the Ministry of Energy is required to save water consumption, and in the next clause, the Ministry of Agriculture is required to achieve self-sufficiency in strategic products like wheat, alfalfa, and rice, which require a lot of water.

In recent weeks, the water crisis in Iran has become a super challenge for the government, and cities and provinces have been repeatedly shut down to save water.
