Self-restraint alone is not enough, efforts must be made to reduce tensions

Self-restraint alone is not enough, efforts must be made to reduce tensions.

Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, described the recent attacks in the heights of Golan, Beirut, and Tehran as dangerously escalating tensions on Friday, August 2nd, and called on all sides to show maximum self-restraint.

In statements published on social media, Guterres wrote, ‘While all efforts should be towards a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all Israeli hostages, and increasing humanitarian aid, the attacks in Golan, Beirut, and Tehran are dangerously escalating tensions.’

He further urged the global community to prevent any action that would marginalize the entire Middle East by taking diplomatic actions. He wrote, ‘I continuously call for maximum self-restraint. However, it is increasingly clear that self-restraint alone is not enough at this sensitive time. I urge everyone to strongly work towards reducing tensions in the region for the benefit of long-term peace and stability.’
