Seven women were killed by their current or former husbands in different parts of Turkey in one day.

The Turkish news channel Haber Turk reported on Tuesday, February 27, that a total of seven women were brutally killed on this day in Izmir, Bursa, Sakarya, Erzurum, Denizli, and Istanbul. The media reported that the suspects were either their current husbands or husbands they had separated from.

According to this report, these women, aged between 32 and 49, were killed by gunfire or stabbing. At least three of the attackers committed suicide, two were arrested, and one died after being injured during arrest. The fate of the seventh person, who escaped from prison to kill his wife, is unknown.

In 2023, a women’s rights NGO called ‘We Will Stop Femicide’ recorded 315 cases of women’s murders in Turkey that year.

The mentioned NGO noted that in the past 15 years in Turkey, the only year when the murder of women decreased was 2011, when the Istanbul Convention was adopted.
