Shirzad Najafi: 756 villages in Lorestan are facing the threat of landslides
Shirzad Najafi, the Director General of Natural Resources and Watershed Management of Lorestan, stated that 756 villages in Lorestan are at risk of landslides. Most of these villages are located in the counties of Delfan, Khorramabad, and Aligudarz.
He told Mehr News Agency that being situated in the central Zagros belt, along with specific geological conditions and severe land use changes, has resulted in a high potential for environmental hazards, including earthquakes, floods, and landslides in Lorestan. Najafi mentioned that so far, more than 2,980 landslide points have been identified, either as individual landslides or landslide zones.
Najafi expressed concern for more than 218 villages that have been directly built on landslide areas, saying that if a 100-meter perimeter around landslide areas is considered a danger zone, the number of villages at risk would increase to over 756.
He stated that due to land use changes, including the establishment of orchards, traditional irrigation, and road construction, many naturally stabilized and inactive landslide areas have become active again. This situation makes many rural areas built on these lands practically uninhabitable, necessitating immediate action for the relocation of these areas.
