A number of goldsmiths in Tehran’s market went on strike for the second day in protest against the tax bill passed by the Islamic Consultative Assembly and closed their shops.
This protest action, which began on Sunday, April 29th, continued on Monday according to images shared on social media.
The Civil Protest Market Telegram channel reported that goldsmiths in Tabriz’s market also stopped working on Monday in protest against the same tax bill passed by the Assembly.
On Sunday, the representatives of the Islamic Consultative Assembly amended two articles of the anti-speculation tax plan to address the Guardian Council’s concerns.
In May 2023, Ebrahim Raisi’s government unveiled the capital gains tax plan on gold, which requires goldsmiths to pay taxes to the government for gold assets exceeding 150 grams.
