Spain says social media platforms like X should not interfere in the internal affairs of countries.

Pilar Alegría, the spokesperson for the Spanish government, emphasized the necessity of neutrality for social media platforms during a press conference on Tuesday, the 18th, in response to a question about recent disagreements between Elon Musk, the owner of the social network X, and European leaders like UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Alegría stated, ‘We believe that social networks should always operate with absolute neutrality and without interfering in the affairs of countries.’

According to Reuters, a spokesperson for the European Commission also said on Monday that although Musk is free to use his right to freedom of expression to share his views about Europe, the social network X must adhere to the European Union’s Digital Services Act, which mandates that major social networks reduce potential risks to electoral processes and civil discourse.
