Beginning of Border Demarcation Between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan
Armenia and Azerbaijan announced on Tuesday that they have started to demarcate their shared border as part of efforts to normalize relations.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had agreed last month to Baku’s request to return four border villages that were part of Azerbaijan during the Soviet Union.
Last week, the two countries agreed to advance the demarcation of borders in the region based on maps from the former Soviet Union, a decision that sparked protests among Armenian villagers near the border. On Tuesday, the interior ministries of both countries announced the start of border demarcation work in the region.
Baku announced that expert groups are working to clarify geographical coordinates based on border studies, while Armenia emphasized that the transfer of any part of its territory to Baku is fundamentally unacceptable.
