Statement by the Students of the Faculty of Sciences, University of Tehran

A statement by a group of students from the Faculty of Sciences, University of Tehran, protesting the arrest and suspension of students and the insecurity in the university environment. In the name of the God of the rainbow and in memory of the rain that taught us.

This letter is written by a group of students from the Faculty of Sciences, University of Tehran. We are engaged in understanding how the universe works in a world created by God, where order and logic are always under scrutiny. However, what has been happening recently, especially the treatment of students and faculty members, lacks logic and is beneath our social dignity.

The unfortunate events that have occurred at the university recently are known to all. These events, which have affected both students and faculty members, who are symbols of the country’s academia, are devoid of civility. Students who have been barred from their legal right to enter the university have been replaced by plainclothes individuals who inspect students upon entry and exit. When students raise their voices in protest for their fellow countrymen and classmates, they are treated in the most shameless manner and are beaten.

Dear professors, each of us is free before we hold any title. We were born free, and we are certain we will leave this world free. You have taught us about the laws of nature in your classes. We seek lessons of freedom and courage from you. How can we attend classes when our classmates are detained and not even allowed to enter the university?

Students of the Faculty of Sciences will not attend any classes until all students are freed and their entry ban is lifted. We sincerely request you to be the voice of the students. We ask you not to remain silent, for your silence means supporting oppression and the oppressor. In this situation, we also have a word with the university’s security, which has never listened to the students and has inflamed and destabilized the university environment with its irrational behavior. We want to say that you are not the owners of this university. The university is the second home for students and professors. Our laughs and tears are tied to this building day and night. No one can truly deprive us of our right to be present and use our home with such shameless behavior. In condemnation of what we call a crime by the security against the university community, and in solidarity with our suspended, arrested, and martyred classmates across the country, we boycott university classes. We swear by the blood of our comrades that we will stand until the end, and the boycott by the students of the faculty will continue until the university security regrets its actions and offers a formal apology. ‘And do not incline toward those who do wrong, lest you be touched by the Fire, and you would not have other than Allah any protectors; then you would not be helped.’ Truthful is the Almighty God.
