Statement of the Assembly of Teachers of the Qom Seminary: Carrying out the death penalty will further ignite the protests
The statement of the Assembly of Teachers and Researchers of the Qom Seminary regarding the execution of the death sentence of one of the protesters, especially in a situation where it is necessary for the government to take steps to calm the situation by listening to the people’s protests, has astonished a large part of society, particularly intellectuals and the country’s well-wishers, and has further wounded the public conscience. Undoubtedly, in a situation where, due to poverty, inflation, misery, and inefficiency in governing the country, the majority of people are dissatisfied and protesting, issuing and carrying out the death penalty will only further inflame the protests.
Regardless of the religious and legal issues that existed in the process of trial, issuance, and sudden execution of this sentence, fundamentally, execution is not a correct solution for ensuring security and reducing tension because it adds to the anger and resentment of society and shows a lack of awareness of the public’s mindset and the officials’ disregard for the country’s interests. Moreover, the main problem is that the judicial process of these trials has not been able to convince public opinion.
