Sudan rejected Iran’s proposal to establish a naval base

Zarif indicates that Tehran offered Sudan to provide a permanent naval base to the Islamic Republic of Iran on the coast of the Red Sea near Khartoum. Iran proposed to give a warship capable of carrying and launching helicopters from its deck to the Sudanese army, but Sudan rejected this offer.

The American newspaper Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, February 3, quoting Ahmad Hassan Mohammad, an intelligence advisor to the Sudanese military leadership, that Iran also offered the incentive to Khartoum leaders for the possession of operational rights in the Sudanese military base. Iran proposed to provide suicide drones to Sudan to be used in battles between the army of this country and rebel forces.

The Sudanese official added, ‘The Iranians told us they will use this base in Sudan to gather information.’

Having a naval base on the shores of the Red Sea will enable Tehran to have more control over the busy maritime route, especially in situations where Iranian-backed insurgents attack international commercial ships.
