Summoning of Iranian Ambassador in Rome After Tearing of Italian President’s Photo in Iran’s Parliament

Diplomatic tensions between Tehran and Rome intensified after a picture of the Italian President was torn in the Iranian Parliament. Following this action, Antonio Tajani, the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, ordered the summoning of the Iranian ambassador in Rome.

Tajani wrote on the social network X that in Tehran, an Iranian representative tore a picture of President Sergio Mattarella during a parliamentary session. He added that he had ordered the summoning of the Iranian ambassador to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to express strong condemnation of this incident and to express his full solidarity with the head of state due to this incident.

Two days ago, Mojtaba Zarei, a member of the Iranian Parliament, tore a picture of several European leaders, including Sergio Mattarella, during a public session of the parliament. He described this action as a reaction to the European Parliament’s insult to the image of the leader of the Islamic Republic.

Last week, Isabella Tovaglieri, an Italian representative in the European Parliament, tore a picture of the leader of the Islamic Republic during her speech.
