Sweden agrees to extradite an asylum seeker to Turkey

After numerous efforts and ultimately following Turkey’s approval, Finland finally succeeded in joining NATO. However, Sweden, due to Turkey’s objections and obstruction, remains in the waiting room for membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

One of the disputes between Turkey and Sweden is Ankara’s request for the extradition of several imprisoned citizens in Sweden who are accused by Turkey. Until now, Sweden had opposed this request, but now has agreed to it in at least one case, albeit with a condition.

On Thursday, April 6th, Sweden’s Ministry of Justice announced its agreement to extradite Ömer Altun, a 29-year-old Turkish citizen who has been sentenced to 15 years in prison by a Turkish court on charges of fraud.
