Telegrams for doctors
Doctors and Haniyeh had met before his assassination.
As of the writing of this report, Israel has not yet condemned this assassination or allegations of involvement in this operation.
In Haniyeh’s assassination, Israel shot an arrow with two targets, the second target being the new government of Masoud Pezeshkian.
On the day the reformist president took office, a foreign leader and Iran’s ally was assassinated, and Pezeshkian, as the head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, should examine this security crisis and its international implications.
If Saeed Jalili, Pezeshkian’s rival in the presidential election, had won, despite his radical and extremist positions and his verbose style, he would have helped Israel’s efforts to convince the international community that diplomatic engagement with Iran is futile and that the country must come under maximum pressure.
However, Pezeshkian is a moderate and despite regularly condemning America’s support for Israel in the Gaza war, imposing severe economic sanctions on Iran, and exiting the nuclear deal or JCPOA, during his election campaign he emphasized dialogue with America and demonstrated himself as pragmatic.
Doctors have repeatedly stated that they will pursue negotiations with the United States, a position apparently supported by Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, to suspend economic sanctions.
Negotiation between Iran and the United States is the last thing that Israel, especially Benjamin Netanyahu, would want to happen at this time.
Whatever the case, Netanyahu is pushing for war in the hope that Iran will react more strongly and directly enter the war, not Hezbollah or Iran do not want to engage in war with Israel at this stage, but no one should assume that if a full-scale war is initiated with Lebanon and Hezbollah, Iran will stand aside.
In contrast to the Sunni Islamist group Hamas, which has had disagreements with Iran over the past 20 years, especially when it refrained from supporting Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian war and provoked Tehran’s anger, Hezbollah is an organization of Shia Muslims that is considered Iran’s most important asset in the Middle East.
If Israel initiates a full-scale war with Lebanon and the Islamic Republic of Iran does not act to defend Hezbollah, it will lose all the credibility it has built with its allies in the Middle East.
Iran is currently being criticized for not defending Hamas in Gaza, as it is being criticized by the Houthis in Yemen.
Since Iran has shown no signs of engaging in direct war with Israel, the best next scenario for Israel is to place Iran in an indefensible position.
The assassination of the unified leader of Iran, especially in Tehran, on the night the new government is sworn in, is the same trap that will put his doctors and allies in very difficult conditions.
