Telephone conversation between the foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia
Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud and his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian agreed in a phone call to meet soon to pave the way for reopening the embassies of the two countries.
According to the official Saudi news agency SPA, the two officials spoke by phone on the occasion of the start of Ramadan.
On March 10, Iran and Saudi Arabia, with China’s mediation, agreed to resume relations after several years of sporadic negotiations mediated by Iraq and other countries.
At that time, it was said that the foreign ministers of the two countries would meet soon to reopen the embassies.
On March 19, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian stated that both parties had agreed for technical delegations to visit the embassies and consulates to facilitate the practical preparations for reopening the embassies.
Relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia were cut off nearly 7 years ago by Saudi officials after Basij students and Hezbollah supporters attacked the Saudi embassy in Tehran and its consulate in Mashhad in protest against the execution of a Shia cleric opposed to the Saudi government.
