The femicide law in Italy was passed simultaneously with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Members of the Italian parliament unanimously voted to recognize femicide, the killing of a woman because of her gender, as a distinct crime, with a penalty of life imprisonment.

This bill was symbolically passed on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

There had been previous discussions about passing a femicide law in Italy, but the murder of Giulia Cecchettin by her ex-boyfriend profoundly shocked the country and accelerated the legislative process.

In late November 2022, this 22-year-old woman was stabbed to death by Filippo Torta, who then wrapped Giulia’s body in several bags and left it by a lake.
