The mission of the fact-finding committee and the special rapporteur for Iran has been extended

The United Nations’ highest human rights body convened a session in Geneva on Thursday, April 4th, corresponding to the 16th of Farvardin. During this session, the members of this body voted by majority to extend the mission of the fact-finding committee for addressing the suppression of the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ movement and also the mission of Javaid Rehman, the UN special rapporteur for Iran.

Out of the 47 members of this council, 24 countries voted in favor of extending these two missions, while only 8 countries voted against it. Additionally, 15 countries abstained from voting.

China, Cuba, Sudan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Algeria, Burundi, and Eritrea voted against this resolution. Bangladesh, Brazil, India, Malaysia, Qatar, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates were among the countries that abstained from voting.

The resolution of this council states that extending Javaid Rehman’s mission is essential for the continued monitoring of the current human rights situation, including civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights.
