The US declared Taiwan a major non-NATO ally
The Taiwan Policy Act was approved by the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, approving billions of dollars in military aid to Taiwan, which is a serious step towards changing US policy in providing aid to the island.
Beyond that, with the final approval of this act in the US Congress, America will have new political relations with Taiwan. Although Taiwan will still not be recognized as an independent country, the US representative office on the island will become an official representation, and the US representative will be confirmed by the Senate like ambassadors. This act has declared Taiwan a major non-NATO ally and now places it among the most important allied countries of the US.
Bob Menendez and Jim Risch, two senior Democratic and Republican members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, have emphasized supporting Taiwan and striving to protect it while avoiding tension with China.
