The U.S. State Department is working to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

The Deputy Spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, in response to the claims made by Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, that Iran is weeks away from obtaining uranium enriched to the level needed for a nuclear weapon, said that we are working to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

This State Department official added that we will continue to support the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency in his efforts. We will also continue close consultations with the European Troika and other partners on this matter.

Patel stated that the U.S. President has clearly said that we are doing everything we can to ensure that Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons, but I have no assessment to provide regarding Grossi’s statements.

Regarding some alleged reports about behind-the-scenes negotiations between Iran and the U.S. to resume the implementation of the 2015 agreement, he said this question should be answered by the United States and Iran, but the Agency has always emphasized the need for dialogue.
