Zelensky-Trump Puzzle
The Zelensky-Trump puzzle has about three months left until the US presidential election, but Donald Trump, who has a better chance of winning against Joe Biden in these elections, is facing challenges in US foreign policy.
The war in Ukraine is one of the most important of these challenges, and Trump has promised to end this war if he wins the November election.
Recently, Trump, with the official announcement of his candidacy by the Republican Party, has had a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and according to Zelensky, both sides have agreed to a face-to-face meeting to discuss steps towards sustainable peace with Russia.
Zelensky wrote that after Trump accepted the nomination of his party, this conversation took place to congratulate him on this matter and condemn the ill intentions towards him in Pennsylvania.
As the Ukrainian President reported, during this conversation, he referred to the vital support of the two main parties and two chambers of the US towards Ukraine, and both sides agreed to discuss actions that could genuinely and fairly stabilize peace in the region in a meeting.
Zelensky emphasized in his tweet that Ukraine will always appreciate the help of the United States in strengthening our ability to resist against Russia.
Russian attacks on our cities and villages continue every day.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has killed tens of thousands on both sides, is now in its twenty-second month and there is still no end in sight. Russia currently occupies about 17% of Ukraine.
Donald Trump also described his conversation with the President of Ukraine as a very good call and promised to end the war between Russia and Ukraine through negotiation.
Trump has said that if he wins the fifth of November election, he will end the war in Ukraine even before taking power in January.
He has also said that if the Kremlin had sent its forces to Ukraine in February 2022, war would not have broken out.
The Republican presidential candidate in the US election promised on his social media to bring peace to the world as president and end a war that has claimed many lives.
He added that both sides can negotiate a deal that ends violence and paves the way for prosperity.
Zelensky’s contact with Trump has raised concerns in Kyiv and other European capitals about the possibility of Trump’s four-year presence in the White House.
Republican chances of winning the November 2024 election have improved after Joe Biden’s 81-year-old performance in last month’s debate, which raised questions about his physical and mental condition.
Trump had previously praised Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling the Kremlin leader’s tactics before the invasion of Ukraine clever, and has criticized European NATO allies repeatedly for not spending more on the collective defense pact.
Republican lawmakers in the House, who are closely aligned with Trump, blocked Biden’s $61 billion aid package to Ukraine for months, resulting in Ukrainian forces facing shortages in ammunition and air defense.
Experts say that Ukraine’s lack of ammunition has contributed to Russia’s territorial gains this year.
Trump has not clarified his future support for Ukraine, although this week Senator from Ohio, DJ Vance, explicitly opposed aiding Kyiv as his deputy.
The 39-year-old senator said that the United States does not have the military capacity to simultaneously support Taiwan, Israel, and Ukraine, and should prioritize the first two.
In his 92-minute speech at the National Republican Convention, Trump said that if he wins the election, he will begin global peace and stability.
He had previously said that if he wins the election, he will resolve the Ukraine conflict before stepping foot in the White House on January 20, 2025.
However, Trump has not mentioned what conditions he will propose to Russia and Ukraine.
