UN General Assembly Resolution: Iran must immediately stop all violence against protesters

The UN General Assembly passed a resolution urging Iran to immediately cease all forms of violence against peaceful protesters. This resolution was condemned by Iran.

The resolution expressed concern over the significant increase in death sentences, the high number of death sentences for minorities compared to others, and the disregard for the duty to protect citizens, which is the government’s responsibility under international law.

The draft of this resolution was prepared by the Third Committee of the General Assembly, which focuses on human rights, social, and humanitarian issues.

During the adoption of this resolution, titled ‘The Human Rights Situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran,’ the Iranian representative strongly rejected its content, stating that countries with the darkest human rights records are supporting this resolution. The resolution was proposed with Canada’s support.
