UN High Commissioner for Human Rights' Reaction to Recent String of Executions in Iran

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights’ reaction to the recent consecutive executions in Iran

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, has expressed strong concern over reports of the execution of 29 individuals in the past two days.

UN Human Rights Office spokesperson Liz Throssell has also stated that this indicates a very alarming number of executions in such a short period.

While the United Nations has said it cannot independently confirm the number of these executions, Ms. Throssell has stated that based on reported executions, the total number of executions this year has reached at least 345, including 15 women.

The Iran Human Rights Organization, based in Norway, announced in a report on Thursday, August 7th, that 29 men, including two Afghan nationals and one Baloch ethnic minority, were executed in Qazalhessar Prison in Karaj on charges of murder and drug-related crimes.
