Kremlin’s unexpected decision: Russia withdraws all its troops from Nagorno-Karabakh

Politico wrote that Russia intends to withdraw the 2,000 troops present in Nagorno-Karabakh because it is directing its forces towards the war in Ukraine.

Only six months after witnessing the forced mass migration of Armenians from this region, the Kremlin, in a surprising statement, announced that Russia will withdraw nearly all of its 2,000 troops from the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan.

According to the Russian state news agency TASS, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the withdrawal of the troops on Wednesday.

Under the terms of the 2020 ceasefire between Azerbaijan and Armenia, 1,960 Russian soldiers, as well as hundreds of armored personnel carriers and other military equipment, were deployed in the region.

They were tasked with maintaining peace at least until the end of 2025, but Moscow is directing all available resources towards its war against Ukraine.
