U.S. Criticism of the Treatment of Baha’is in Iran
Ned Price, spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, criticized the sentencing of two Baha’i women in Iran to 10 years in prison and called for an end to the government’s mistreatment of followers of this faith.
Mr. Price wrote on Twitter that earlier this month, Iran sentenced two Baha’i women to 10 years in prison because of their beliefs. The ongoing persecution of Baha’is through home raids, business closures, show trials, and property destruction must end.
The global Baha’i community issued a statement on December 11th announcing the sentencing of Mahvash Sabet and Fariba Kamalabadi to 10 years in prison.
These two had previously been imprisoned for 10 years as well.
According to reports, the harassment and arrest of Baha’is in Iran have intensified alongside the crackdown on nationwide protests.
