The U.S. proposed resolution to the Security Council calls for a temporary ceasefire in Gaza for the release of hostages.
The United States has submitted a draft resolution to the United Nations Security Council calling for a temporary ceasefire in the Gaza conflict and warning against Israel’s military operations in Rafah.
According to Reuters, which has seen a copy of the draft, the text of the draft specifies that the Security Council should support a temporary ceasefire as soon as it is feasible, in exchange for the release of all hostages.
The report also states that the draft mentions that under current circumstances, a large-scale ground operation in Rafah would lead to further harm to civilians and more displacement, including to neighboring countries.
The UN Security Council is set to vote on the draft resolution proposed by Algeria on Tuesday morning, but the U.S. has already stated it will veto it.
The U.S. has previously opposed all proposed drafts for a ceasefire in Gaza, and some analysts say the new draft indicates the extent of U.S. concern over the consequences of Israel’s attack on Rafah.
