US reaction to the arrest of the Wall Street Journal reporter in Russia

The Russian government says the United States has threatened to take retaliatory action against the arrest of a reporter from the American publication, the Wall Street Journal, in Russia.

Ivan Gershkovich, a reporter for this publication, was arrested last month in the city of Yekaterinburg and accused of espionage by Russian authorities.

The US government has stated that his arrest is unacceptable.

The Russian ambassador to the US has said that a senior US government official told him that Mr. Gershkovich should be released in the near future.

He has stated that Russia should consider reducing the number of American journalists allowed to work in the country.

With the start of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the country’s domestic media came under strict government control, but the presence of foreign journalists in the country has somewhat preserved the possibility of independent reporting, at least for the public outside of Russia.

Some media outlets have warned that failing to respond appropriately to the arrest of the Wall Street Journal reporter may lead Russia to continue using this method to pressure Western media.
