The Wall Street Journal: Billions of dollars linked to Iran pass through American banks
The Wall Street Journal reported that despite the increased economic pressures from the Trump administration, billions of dollars in funds linked to Iran are transferred annually through brokerage accounts in American banks.
According to this report, the U.S. Treasury Department identified around $9 billion in transactions related to Iran in 2024. These funds entered the U.S. dollar settlement system using foreign banks, shell companies, and opaque financial networks.
The newspaper emphasized that the complexity of the international banking network makes it difficult to fully identify and stop such transactions, not that American banks are intentionally obstructing the enforcement of sanctions.
