The Wall Street Journal: Trump was ready to exit the war with Iran without a nuclear deal
The Wall Street Journal, citing American officials, reported that Donald Trump had been preparing in recent weeks to declare victory in the war with Iran, provided Tehran fully reopens the Strait of Hormuz.
According to these officials, Trump even raised the possibility in private conversations with his senior advisors of exiting the conflict without achieving a nuclear deal with Iran, and in recent weeks, the White House has increasingly focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
However, the newspaper says that Iran’s new demands, including the end of the naval blockade, the withdrawal of American forces from the region, lifting sanctions, releasing blocked assets, and paying compensation, have complicated Trump’s intended path for ending the war.
The Wall Street Journal added that recent developments in negotiations indicate that Tehran believes the leverage of the Strait of Hormuz has given it an upper hand and is also prepared for a prolonged and exhausting conflict.
