Warning about the potential misuse of AI by China to interfere in foreign elections
Microsoft warned on Friday that after the recent Taiwanese presidential election, China might use artificial intelligence to disrupt elections in the United States, India, and other rival powers.
According to The Guardian, during the recent Taiwanese presidential election, Beijing conducted a test operation using AI-generated content, which led voters to distance themselves from a pro-sovereignty candidate who had taken a stance against China.
Microsoft’s intelligence team, which monitors threats, assessed in their report published on Friday, April 6, that China, along with North Korea, might increasingly use AI-generated content to influence the results of this year’s elections in countries like the United States, India, and South Korea.
Ahead of the U.S. presidential election this November, concerns have grown among both rival parties in Congress and other American institutions about potential Chinese cyberattacks and influence on the elections.
