The Washington Post: US withdrawal from Iraq may strengthen Iran’s position

In a report on the end of the two-decade US military presence in Iraq, The Washington Post wrote that Iran has now become more central to the future developments of the region than before.

Mark Cancian, a senior advisor at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the withdrawal of American forces could strengthen Iran’s position in Iraq and the region.

According to him, the 2003 US military operation, by overthrowing Saddam, plunged Iraq into a period of instability and removed one of Iran’s regional rivals.
