With the approval of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, the death sentence of Babak Zanjani was overturned and changed to 20 years in prison.

The spokesperson for the Judiciary announced in a press conference held on Tuesday, April 30th, that a request for clemency for Babak Zanjani was raised by the Tehran prosecutor’s office, and with the approval of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, his death sentence was overturned and converted to 20 years in prison.

Regarding Babak Zanjani’s case, Asghar Jahangir mentioned that his case was ruled by Branch 38 of the Supreme Court in 2016, and it was anticipated that if he returned the assets and expressed remorse, he could be eligible for a reduced sentence.

The Judiciary spokesperson further stated that due to Mr. Zanjani’s cooperation during his 10 years in prison, assets located outside the country were identified and repatriated to the country.

Previously, the head of the Judiciary of Iran had claimed that the assets transferred by Babak Zanjani to Iran cover his debts.
