World Press Freedom Day: Iran Remains at the Bottom of the Press Freedom Index

On World Press Freedom Day, Iran remains at the bottom of the press freedom rankings.

Reporters Without Borders, in its 2024 Press Freedom Index released on Friday, May 3, 2024, warned that while half of the world’s population will be heading to the polls this year in various elections, political pressures on the global press are increasing.

According to the new ranking by Reporters Without Borders, Eritrea has been placed last, at rank 180, in terms of press freedom, replacing North Korea, which held this position for the past two years.

Reporters Without Borders describes the situation of press freedom as very difficult in 36 countries and complicated in 60 others. The authors of this report have assessed the situation as good in only 8 countries worldwide.

Overall, this report has shown that conditions for journalists are unfavorable in three-quarters of the world’s countries.

This report shows that Iran, with a rank of 176, remains at the bottom of the press freedom index, with only Syria, North Korea, Afghanistan, and Eritrea having worse conditions than Iran.
