Hossein Amir Abdollahian, the Iranian Foreign Minister, told Amir Khan Mateqi, the Foreign Minister of the Taliban government, that his country demands the release of water and the provision of irrigation rights for the Helmand River from Afghanistan.
The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a series of tweets about the phone conversation between the two sides and stated that Mr. Amir Abdollahian told Mr. Mateqi that the release of water from Afghanistan and the provision of irrigation rights to Iran is a practical and serious demand of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which will have an impact on bilateral relations.
The ministry added that the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic, referring to the numerous problems caused by the lack of irrigation rights for Iran and the resulting drought on the people of Sistan and Baluchestan, expressed hope that the Afghan side would pay necessary attention to the release of water from this dam and delivering it to Sistan.
Mr. Amir Abdollahian also mentioned instances of tension and clashes between Iranian border forces and the Taliban, considering it a negative factor in the relations between the two countries, and stated that commitment to the security of the common border is our red line.
