1,000 Israeli figures call on Germany to cancel Netanyahu’s visit
The newspaper Haaretz reported on Tuesday, March 14 (Esfand 23), that around one thousand artists, writers, and university professors in Israel have sent a letter to the German and British ambassadors in the country, asking them to cancel the upcoming visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Berlin and London.
In their letter, they argued that Israel is experiencing one of the most severe crises in its history and is on the verge of transforming from a vibrant democracy into a theocratic dictatorship.
Their reference is to the judicial overhaul plan that Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, composed of right-wing and religious extremist parties, is attempting to implement as quickly as possible.
This plan, parts of which have already been approved by the parliament, weakens the Israeli judiciary and deals a severe blow to the principle of separation of powers, which is considered a key obstacle to the formation of authoritarian regimes.
