400 ten-million-year-old fossils discovered in Maragheh
The head of Maragheh’s Department of Environmental Protection said the age of the fossils from this site dates back 10 million years and is older than what has been excavated in Maragheh so far.
According to the Director General of Environmental Protection of East Azerbaijan, the first phase of this excavation was completed with an allocation of 350 million tomans, and 500 million tomans have been allocated for the second phase of research and fossil excavation.
He said the extracted fossils have been transferred to the Maragheh Paleontology Research Center for study.
Eshtari further stated that this year, 6 billion tomans have been allocated to complete the national paleontology research center in Maragheh.

Zare added that most of the fossils obtained include skulls, jaws of carnivores, limbs, and intact pelvises.
He added that the drilling and extraction of fossils in the Ahagh region of Maragheh started for the first time on October 12.
