721 million dollars in cryptocurrency stolen from Japan

The Tokyo-based economic newspaper Nikkei Nihon Keizai reported on Monday, May 15, that hackers affiliated with the North Korean government have stolen 721 million dollars in cryptocurrency from Japan over the past five years.

This report, based on research by a British blockchain analysis company called Elliptic, notes that this amount is equivalent to 30% of all cryptocurrencies stolen worldwide during this period.

Research by Elliptic shows that North Korean hackers have stolen a total of 2.3 billion dollars in cryptocurrency from financial and commercial companies in various countries around the world between 2017 and 2022.

The Japanese newspaper Nikkei adds that the North Korean government’s goal in stealing cryptocurrencies is to acquire foreign currencies to fund its missile program, which threatens the stability and security of Asia.
